Trying to Figure Out How to Get Rid of Mold

black-moldThis 200 year old house is filled with mystery and essences of the past but also it has mold. Now I need to find out how to get rid of mold before it becomes toxic. I have noticed mold in a few corners of the bathroom and basement. I am thinking that a lot of the mold may also be in the duck work of the house.

I have heard that mold can be removed by using vinegar. I don’t know how you would get it out of the heating system though.

I am going to use a bleach mixture with water on the exterior surfaces of the corners in the bathroom and down in the basement. I know that mold can be killed but I also know that killing the mold is not enough. You need to get rid of the mold completely or it will come back.

I have had black mold on interior walls before and I had to completely remove the whole wall to the studs and re drywall the whole entire wall. Before redrywalling we had to remove the mold from the studs. As to how to get rid of mold on studs, we just sprayed the surface with the bleach mixture and then let the studs dry. After drying we then scraped the studs until there was no evidence of mold remaining. We did not use the palm sander on the treated area for we did not want the spore to be transmitted in the sander dust into the air. I am hoping that this is not the case with mold in other areas and with less severity.

I have been doing some research on how to get rid of mold online but I have not come up with a whole lot of information. I guess I will just have to keep searching until I find more answers. I definitely do not want to leave this iisue unresolved. There is a lot of duck work to remove in this old house and I can not afford a professional heating company. I’ll come up with an answer somewhere.

  1. We just bought an old house also. Mold is a major problem with these big old things. We had to remove quite a bit of mold to make it livable. Hope you are able to get a handle on this.

I am not sure what you need to do about the duct work but I am sure there must be an easy way to get the mold out without replacing the whole system.

Keep us posted as to what you find out.

  2. I have the answer to the mold problem! Tri-Seal Barrier Liquid. It really works,it’s clear and mold cannot grow back on it. It’s also non-toxic,no voc’s and it’s ‘Green’. On places where you said you had to scrape off the mold, like on the studs and inside the walls, you can just spray it all over the studs and sheetrock. When it dries, all the mold is dead and the stuff dries real quick too! Then, on places that you can see, just clean the mold, spray the wall and it will dry clear so you can hardly tell(very slight sheen, can’t tell on semi-gloss or gloss) and the mold will never grow back! The stuff is awesome. I love it and you can spray it on almost anything.

We are still battling the mold here. And the rainy weather just keeps on going.
